Whether you’re a group of friends, or a couple planning a romantic trip away, this blog post has you covered with 5 top things to do in Mykonos.
Now I don’t know about you, but one thing I like to do when planning for a holiday is putting together an itinerary list. Each day of the trip doesn’t need to be mapped out to the minute, but a general list of things I’d like to do and experience, gives me a sense of purpose. To fly out all the way to Mykonos, only to wander around the town each day aimlessly isn’t my idea of a holiday.
But don’t get me wrong, there is always room for at least one day of exploring around town, especially if it means a cheeky shopping trip! So if you’re like me, and want an idea of what you can get up to on the beautiful island that is Mykonos, then keep on reading.
1. Beach Days
So let’s talk about a pretty common activity people do when they visit Mykonos, or any Greek island of that matter – beach days. And how can you not, right?! Mykonos holds some of the most stunning beaches around the island, making it an ideal spot to catch some rays. Why not also beach hop, checking out some of the best spots Mykonos has to offer, including Paradise, Super Paradise, Elia, Kapari, Agrari and Lia Beaches.
If you’re not convinced you’d be able to handle a whole day of beach hopping, consider the fact that Mykonos is known for it’s strong winds. You have the benefit of cloudless days so you can really soak up the sun, but have the edge taken off with a very much welcomed breeze. There’s also of course the chance to run into the sea if you need to cool down, where the gorgeous green water remains cool enough to be refreshing rather than shocking to the system.
2. Beach Clubs
Speaking of beaches, let’s say you’re someone who loves a beach, but you need a little more entertainment. You enjoy soaking in some sun and hearing the waves break along the beach, but you could do with some music to make you feel like you’re on holiday. A nice cold Pina Colada would also go down a treat, placed right into your hand, rather than you having to walk half a mile to find the nearest bar. If this is you, then beach clubs are your perfect solution.
Not only can you enjoy a refreshing cold beverage, but food is also served at most of the beach clubs in Mykonos. My boyfriend and I ate at the Kalua beach club, where they had a variety of options, including dishes suitable for vegans. I’m not a vegan, but I was attempting a vegan diet before my trip to Mykonos, and let’s just say it ended before I returned home.
I ordered a quinoa salad that came with an elegantly sliced avocado (my fave!) and my boyfriend ordered a burger and chips. The food was delicious and especially good as we ate it sprawled out over a sun-bed! Ha! We hired two single sun-beds, coming up to 70 euros in total. Now I know what you’re going to say – “70 euros!” Yes, it is a bit pricey, but Kalua was considerably cheaper than the well-known Nammos beach club, so we saved some coins in that sense (well that’s what I tell myself anyway!).
3. Eating Out
So where else do I recommend for food? The top location that comes to mind is the strip of restaurants that run along the coast in Mykonos Town. And it’s not so much the food that makes it attractive (although it is super tasty), but it’s more so the views you can witness whilst digging into a great meal. Many of the restaurants along the strip have seating areas outside their window fronts under a canopy, so you can really immerse yourself into the picturesque surroundings.
Now considering I was on holiday on an island surrounded by miles and miles of water, it only made sense that I tried some of the seafood that Mykonos had to offer. I’m a sucker for a good calamari dish, so I just couldn’t help myself when I saw it listed on the menu at Captain’s. And boy it didn’t disappoint! The portion size was absolutely huge, so I could have avoided ordering the side of chips, but the calamari was declicious. It tasted so fresh, and there was no hint of that rubbery texture you sometimes get when it’s overcooked. I highly recommend – why not taste the sea while looking over at the sea? (Sorry not sorry).
4. Quad Biking
If there’s one thing you have to try in Mykonos, it’s hiring a quad bike. You might be saying, “erm, you can do that on any holiday, what makes doing it in Mykonos so special?” Well hear me out. Mykonos is an island, but it’s considered a small island. It takes about 40 minutes to drive from one side of the island to the other, and some of the roads stretch out along the coast. So picture riding a quad bike with the sun beaming down on your skin and the wind in your hair, while catching glimpses of the deep blue ocean. Yep! Total bliss! Now that makes travelling anywhere on the island super convenient, but also rather enjoyable.
But note, you’ll find that many others will have caught onto the same idea too. On average, my boyfriend and I shared the roads with a dozen quad bikes and motorcyclists at a time… it never got lonely. There were even times it seemed like the quad bikes outnumbered the cars on the roads! We never felt out of place, nor felt like we shouldn’t be using the bikes on the main roads. That’s not something you experience in many destinations. Amazing right?! We hired a quadbike between us for 3 days, costing around 30 euros per day.
5. Clubbing
Finally, that brings me onto clubbing. If you didn’t know by now, Mykonos is known as Greece’s party island, and for a good reason. The island never sleeps, allowing you to party all throughout the day and night. Although my boyfriend and I didn’t go to a club, we did eat out at Scorpios beach club which turned into a party as soon as it was dark. The music was booming, the drinks were flowing, and we were buzzing! To top it off, Scorpios is located along Paraga beach, allowing us to overlook the sea and see the sunset as we wined and dined. What more could you ask for?!
